Field notes / understand the prescription
What has to happen before a prescription?
Before paying for an online visit, ask whether it can lead to a prescription. Care by phone, video or messages is called telehealth. Missouri's rules leave a question about prescribing at a first online visit; the two rules are set out below.
What does Missouri require of an online assessment?
Under the Missouri rules checked October 1, 2026, a doctor must evaluate you, review relevant health history and examine you enough to support the diagnosis and treatment.
Under those rules, a doctor may begin caring for you through an online or phone visit if your care does not require an office visit.
Ask the doctor whether they can assess your concern remotely or need to examine you in person. Starting care and issuing a prescription have separate rules.
Can an online form ever count?
Since August 28, 2026, a questionnaire can count as the health assessment in Missouri. The person treating you must review it. It must give them as much information as an assessment in person would.
The rule checked October 1, 2026 also requires that person to work for a business licensed for health care in Missouri, as an employee or contractor.
That section does not explain which business licence it means.
Ask the service for the business name and which licence it relies on. Ask how the person reviewing your form works with that business.
Does that settle a first-visit online prescription?
The Missouri prescribing section checked October 1, 2026 still requires an established, ongoing doctor-patient relationship for a prescription based solely on telehealth.
The sources reviewed for this guide in October 2026 included no board explanation of how that prescribing rule fits the newer rule allowing care to begin online.
This guide therefore cannot give a firm yes or no about a prescription at your first online visit. Before paying, ask the service how it follows both rules. Take an unclear answer to Missouri's Healing Arts board, which licenses doctors.
What else can I expect to discuss?
Missouri's online prescribing duties, as checked October 1, 2026, include reliable health history, discussion of choices and risks, suitable follow-up and an accessible care record.
Bring a list of current medicines and the question that led you to seek care. Ask how to reach someone after the visit.
Keep this with your notes
A reviewed form may be part of an assessment. Do not read that as a promise of a prescription at the first online visit.

Read both sections before drawing a conclusion about a first visit.
